Government announces £3M of support for renewable heating in social housing

Published 28th August, 2011

As part of the recently announced Renewable Heat Premium Payment scheme the Government has announced a special £3M fund to support the adoption of renewable heating systems, such as heat pumps and biomass boilers, in social housing.

From 15th August, bids are invited from  registered providers of social housing for funds up to around £175,000 per housing provider to support proposals for heating equipment including biomass boilers, solar hot water panels and heat pumps for social housing tenants. £3 million will be available under the new scheme which should in total finance at least 17 social housing projects. The deadline for bids is the 15th of September.

The bids will be evaluated by a panel of experts on criteria including value for money, the number of individual installations, the opportunity for learning and the number of homes not supplied by mains gas.

Successful applicants will be informed in late September / early October and can start installing renewable heat equipment as soon as they receive confirmation of their winning bid.

This scheme is a precursor to the full Renewable Heat Incentive programme which is expected to become available for social housing in late 2012. Individual home owners can also benefit from the Renewable Heat Premium Payment Scheme, for more details see the Energy Savings Trust .

For commercial and public sector buildings the Renewable Heat Incentive is already available. Contact us for more details on the RHI.

Myriad group companies Econic and Rural Energy are experts in the provision of renewable heating systems and have experience of working on social housing projects. If you are interested in more details on how these systems can be used to reduce energy bills for tenants and decrease heating associated carbon emissions, please contact us for more information.
